Roller Champions devs invented a new spectator sport to release on may 25: Roller Champions, a quick, aggressive, unrestricted game in which you could climb to sports-legend fame, will be released on PS4 (and PS5 through reusability) on May 25. “Blending is at the heart of Roller Champions,” explains Malou, and this is particularly true when it comes to the game’s antecedents, which include arcade games and a 1970s apocalyptic film. Prior to Roller Champions, Malou was a member of a small Ubisoft team entrusted with two tasks: creating free mobile games and monitoring market trends. His team saw that “the market was evolving further towards engagement amongst gamers, viewers, and organizers” at this period, citing Twitch and esports contests as instances.

“Streamers are little more than a Roman emperor who needs to amuse the people,” Malou explains, “and the more entertaining the game is to witness, the more viewers will beg the broadcasters to repeat it.” So we originally imagined a traditional gladiator battle with swords.”

The team devised a whole new sport by mixing soccer, basketball, volleyball, inline hockey, and a few other sports. Roller Champions is indeed a competition that is “not patriarchal, not full with machismo, and that is also, in my perspective, super-duper, since rollerblades are an ecologically friendly method to recover cement landscapes,” according to Malou.

The team caught one obvious, core principle while developing the intricacies of this different sport: the game can be as much enjoyable to watch as it would be to play, and anybody who will not really understand the rules of the game should really be able to experience the excitement just from seeing the competitors go around the racetrack. Malou came up with creative techniques to assess if the game was on the correct track throughout production.
